R200m for nurses' training
01/08/2007 20:09 - (SA)
Cape Town - The Eastern Cape, which has a shortage of health professionals, has set aside R202m to fund the training of more nurses, the provincial health department said on Wednesday.
It said about 850 nursing students were being recruited from around the province to register at the department's Lilitha Nursing College this year.
More than half of them would study towards four-year midwifery, psychiatry, general and community nursing qualifications.
Another 200 would be trained on a two-year enrolled nursing course while another 200 would undergo a one-year nursing assistant course.
Part of the R202m would go towards their salaries, and some would be spent on tuition and administration.
The department was also offering about 300 bursaries to Eastern Cape students for full-time study in fields including medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and occupational therapy.
