Johannesburg - The director-general in the presidency Frank Chikane has met some members of the Afrikaans media in Pretoria.

A spokesperson for the office of the president, Mukoni Ratshitanga, said the meeting was about the prosecution of former minister of Law and Order Adriaan Vlok and his police chief Johann van der Merwe who were recently charged with the attempted murder of Chikane.

Ratshitanga said Chikane told the Afrikaans media that he had forgiven Vlok, but had no control over the prosecution process.

Chikane also told them that his personal decision to forgive Vlok and the legal matters of the case should be separated.

The charges related to an alleged plot to kill Chikane by lining his underwear with poison in 1989 when he was secretary-general of the SA Council of Churches.

The National Prosecuting Authority filed papers with the Pretoria High Court and the matter would be heard on August 17.
