Johannesburg - Embattled ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma was the automatic successor to lead the ruling party and South Africa, the ANC Youth League said on Wednesday.

"We are still firmly behind the deputy president..." said spokesperson Zizi Kodwa.

"The only thing that will make us review our position on Zuma is death... he is the automatic successor, the automatic choice."

The ruling party would elect new office bearers at its upcoming National Conference in December, a leadership race in which Zuma is considered as a serious contender.
