'2c or R100m - I don't care'
04/10/2007 21:22  - (SA)

  • New name for NWest municipality
  • 'What about Pretoria-Tshwane?'
  • Potchefstroom name changes
  • 4 in court about street signs
  • Potch mayor gets name threat
  • Pretoria is Pretoria - Jordan
  • Name changes 'still on the go'
  • Grahamstown - Whether it costs the Makana municipality 2c or R100m to change Grahamstown and names of other places and landmarks, the names will change, said mayor Phumelelo Kate on Thursday.

"You cannot equate the transformation of our country to costs. Change must happen and nothing is going to stop it," Kate was reported as saying in Grocott's Mail.

Grahamstown councillor Theo Fulani said it was "disturbing" that people were using the issue of costs as a threat to transformation.

    iRhini new name of Grahamstown

He said no amount of money could be put on the lives of the many freedom fighters that had been lost during the struggle against apartheid.

"If it takes money to transform our country, let it be. We can't stop, we won't stop," said Fulani.

He and Kate were reiterating the municipality's position on the name change issue at a media breakfast organised by the municipality on Thursday.

The Eastern Cape Geographical Names Committee had identified 58 landmarks and place names in the province to be changed.

Grahamstown and either Settlers Hospital or the 1820 Settlers Monument are among the targeted sites. They are among many in South Africa that have a "bad history" and a "colonial perspective".

The Makana council has also asserted its stand on the issue by agreeing "in principle" to change Grahamstown to iRhini.

    A balance was needed

"Grahamstown must go. It's a name we can't be proud of, considering history and given the baggage that it carries," said Kate. He said a process to eliminate the name from the books of this country was unfolding.

Meanwhile a mayoral committee has been set up to take up public participation. The mayor stressed that only names that "make us have nightmares" will be changed. "The intention is not to get rid or kill the history and heritage of the Settlers." However, he said, a balance was needed.

      Name change
    05/10/2007 01:10
Wow. I never knew that these are the types of idiots in charge of our municipalities. No wonder there is so much corruption and mismanagement. I don't think the people that are living in poverty and trying to find jobs there are blaming it one names signs. How about they use those that R100m to create industry and jobs, that will actually serve the people of our country. You can't keep blaming the past for your own inability to manage a region. - Jaco

      Why are they so heartless
    05/10/2007 01:21
We as ordinary South Africans are suffering we have no jobs and poverty is still hindering any progress we may have. The white man does not give us jobs and the ANC is busy changing names. I don't care about a stupid I just want a job and a better life. Why are they so heartless and arrogant. This has nothing to do with freedom, what freedom do i have when I go to bad hungry. Who is going to save us? Under apartheid we suffered and now we are even worse under the ANC. - Peter

      He does not care.....
    05/10/2007 06:24
I still can't get my head around the fact that they can blow millions of rand on changing street names, but can not give there people basic housing and better living conditions? Money does not grow on trees as they might think. We end up paying for everything? I would much rather my money be used for something useful, i.e. giving someone a better life. I understand the need for transformation, but how dare you say "You do not care" how much money it takes and that it will happen? - What?

      what balance?
    05/10/2007 06:45
I have yet to see any sign of this 'balance'? Can anyone give me an example of a new structure named for English 'settler'? Anyway, let's be fair: start a fund. Those who want the name change pay into it. When they have the money, let them do it. At the moment it's more of a punishment fine to those who don't want it than the 'changers' putting their money where their mouths are. - Dave

      If only it was
    05/10/2007 07:04
transformation happening by changing name places and street names at enormous costs. Reality is that changing names does not provide food, housing, electricity, jobs etc.etc. for the mainly black electorate who desperately need it. Phumelelo Kate is quite clueless on this issue - strangely enough "human rights" is not mentioned here anywhere??? VIVA ANC - let the suffering of the masses continue. - MarioBros

      What can you say...
    05/10/2007 07:12
What can you say, change names at all costs but let your own people die of hunger and poverty! What on earth has a name got to do with transformation???? Wake up people, its just a name!!! Just shows you at what level the government thinks!! At least it is something the geverment are able to do, unlike using that money to better education and health services or policing... - Pieter

      Renaming Grahamstown
    05/10/2007 07:30
I agree with Transformation - however at what cost.Like they are saying a balance is needed! When do we draw the line, at what cost, 100 million??? While there are people in Grahamstown that need houses. It's easy for these top officials to talk transformation whilst their own citizens are homeless and hungry. What's next on the renaming list - the Anglican cathedral in Grahamastown??? - Clint

      If it takes money ....
    05/10/2007 08:00
"If it takes money to transform our country, let it be. We can't stop, we won't stop," said Fulani. Maybe they should also realize that it takes money to transform the country from poverty.... Priorities are scewed!!! - Ria

      We care....
    05/10/2007 08:06
Why a name change???? You people are a bunch of paranoid no-goods. You have nothing better to spend money & time on. You are about to erase some real history. - Sad
