Madisha axed over Zuma
14/12/2007 20:07 - (SA)
Johannesburg - SA Democratic Teachers Union president Willie Madisha has been suspended by his union, Sadtu said on Friday.
"Madisha was suspended at a national executive meeting, after it was found that he told Sadtu members not to vote for Jacob Zuma as the next president of the African National Congress," said Sadtu general secretary Thulas Nxesi.
Madisha was believed to have made statements which were seen as an attack on Zuma, and had urged members not to vote for immoral leaders.
Sadtu is supporting the candidacy of Zuma for ANC president.
Nxesi said the decision was taken by committee members, at the meeting which was chaired by Madisha and Sadtu deputy president Thobile Ntola.
"His actions have definitely brought the union into disrepute... This goes to show there is no union member who is above the constitution. Due processes are to be followed.
"A disciplinary hearing will occur if there are formal charges against Madisha... The matter should be finalised by February next year," Nxesi said.
Prior to the suspension the union said an independent inquiry would be set up to investigate Madisha's allegations in the half a million rand donation saga.
Madisha stepped down as the president of the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu), as the federation was awaiting the outcome of their own probe.
Madisha claimed he handed R500 000 in donor money to the SA Communist Party's general secretary Blade Nzimande. However Nzimande has denied this.
Madisha could not be reached for comment.
