DA wants Selebi to pay himself
17/01/2008 16:01 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance will write a letter to the State Attorney asking that she consider paying possible legal bills by National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi "carefully".
"The DA will be writing to the State Attorney to request that the matter of taxpayers paying Selebi's legal bills be considered most carefully in the light of the nature of the charges," DA spokesperson Dianne Kohler Barnard said in a statement on Thursday.
"If Selebi is found guilty on charges that are a complete anathema to any right-thinking law enforcement agent, the citizens of this country must not pay the bill. The costs of this case are likely to run into millions of rands, given its high profile and contentious nature."
The Freedom Front Plus recently made a request to Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula asking for details on whether Selebi's fees would be covered by the State.
Safety and Security spokesperson Trevor Bloem said a decision could only be made if Selebi was charged.
The NPA has proposed January 30 for Selebi to hand himself over to the Randburg Regional Court to face charges of corruption and defeating the course of justice.
