Unintended Consequence 28/01/2008 22:36
This crisis is an unintended consequence of all the fat cats pocketing huge bonuses, driving "Yengenis" and failing to appreciate that they should have done some work too. Oh dear, an easy mistake to make! - Tom |

I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt and allow him a clean slate. Sorry for me, he has already blotted his copy book with a lie and a cover up. Best I start packing for Perth, we are on a one way downward spiral!
- Jacqui |

That's not what I heard 28/01/2008 22:55
It has been an open secret for a number of years that eskom was told to halt any further capacity development by the ANC government, at the same time the goverment has been pushing a growth target of 6% for at least the last 10 years the fact that we don't have sufficient electricity for our growth is just piss poor planning...interesting to note the the Hon. Mr Zuma was deputy president and an ANC NEC member during much of this time. - Justin |

Not another ostrich plz!!! 28/01/2008 23:02
Dear Mr Zuma. You have, as most politicians not learnt a thing from your predecessor's downfall. Stop the denial of the impact that gross and utter mismanagement, the effects of black empowerment at all cost and the attempts by this government to keep the population literally in the dark, are having on this country at all levels. Some of us at least are not impressed by the steady stream of nonsensical rhetoric that spews from the ANC and its spokesmen every time something goes wrong. - Joe |

Zuma, oh no Response 28/01/2008 23:21
He is correct that growth and poor planning are the underlying causes (Am I am not a Zuma supporter). OK maybe a little lack of maintenance too, but there are no Lies here. Not sure what Jacqui (below) thinks the actually cause of the problem is..... I would be interested to hear. - Nick |

 |

Not true !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 28/01/2008 23:23
On the 1 February last year - during the maintenance cycle - Eskom's output was more than 32,000 mW. But last Thursday ? the day before the mines went dark ? Eskom?s output was 27,000 mW ? because large numbers of power generating stations were out of service. The total capacity loss was enough to power three cities the size of Johannesburg.
Seems to me the economy is shrinking - not growing.

Populist statement from a populist leader 28/01/2008 23:46
Comrade Zuma, please explain how the growing economy is leading to forced retrenchments caused by power cuts? Small businesses can afford only so much cash flow disruption before failing - please paint this into the context of a growing economy? Mines have been shut down - who will be hurt? - the actual miners, not the mine owners. Seems to me to be that "the people" are not enjoying rising living standards at all, but continuous degradation of such instead. - TDJ |

So many challenges 28/01/2008 23:54
Mr. Zuma, it seems to me that the ANC is only adding new "challenges" to our country, and not removing any. Talking about "challenges" will not make them go away. You need ACTION. Your speech was well put together, I admit. Take note that while you may have gained some credibility with your main audience, you have basically lost all credibility on local soil. How dare you trivialize
the energy disaster your government has bestowed on this country?! - TDJ |
|
 |
| |
6% vs actual. 29/01/2008 00:58
Well, we were planning for 6% growth, achieve about 66% of that. Can you imagine the disaster if we had schieved our aims. And on a point of order, the rest of the developing world is growing MUCH faster than RSA, so we are falling behind China, India, Brazil and even many countries in Africa. - KoosS |

Introspection!!! 29/01/2008 01:52
I agree with Joker, indeed the economy is shrinking not growing. Its a shame that as 'Africans' we lack discipline. What's wrong with us?!?!?

Gimme a break!!!!!!! 29/01/2008 03:56
We all seem to forget that theft of electricity in townships remains a huge problem! Municipalities are owed millions due to continuous refusal of the masses to pay for basic services, and therefore in turn owe Escom literally, billions.... How does one continue to develop and expand a service with billions of collectibles outstanding? - Cj |

Rocket Scientists at the ANC and Eskom 29/01/2008 05:07
What bunch of nonsense. The ANC's goals were to increase economic growth from the beginning. They must have real geniuses working there if they can't figure out that an increase in economic growth will leader to wider demand for electricity. I suppose this isn't too much of a shocking statement coming from Zuma, he probably thinks that contracting AIDS is an 'unintented consequence' of having unprotected sex with HIV positive person. - C |

National movement 29/01/2008 05:16
I agree with 1 fact and that is that we the public are as a consequence of the power issues compelled to become allied to a National movement. As a consequence to the power outages it is also a feaseable assumption to say that in the last week our currency has lost some 5 - 8% against all major currencies (therefore negating the fact that the currency weekening is as a result of recessionary pressures)We cannot attempt to deceive or veness the International community. The bluff has failed! - John |

Unintended consequence!!! 29/01/2008 07:07
Maybe he should mention the fact that they DID NOT SPEND ANY MONEY ON PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE.The ANC government could not organise a piss-up in a brewery. Where did they think the power was going to come from? Do they think it "just happens"? I vote for an honorary Rocket Scientist degree for Zuma. He is such a bright fellow-----not!!! - Expat |

Another Politician, Another Lie 29/01/2008 07:08
Perhaps Zuma didn't watch Carte Blanche on Sunday. Growth was expected and the increased demand for electricity was forecast. Did anyone at Eskom or within the Goverment do anything? No, the took performance bonuses for generating less and less electricity each year! - Clinton |

ANC 29/01/2008 07:17
So let's see now - we have a Head of Police who hangs out with gangsters, a Health Minister who was kicked out of Botswana for stealing, senior ANC officials who think nothing of spending R106 000 of taxpayers money on a meal and an ANC president with no formal schooling and an alleged history of immorality and corruption all voted in by a population who are 40% unemployed. This is where democracy sucks. The Eskom debacle isn't suprising, really. - Doug |

What Power Crisis? 29/01/2008 07:23
It seems like you people trust politicians and your destiny depends on them. Bad news for all of you - politicians are there to serve their purposes - trickery.Europe and Brazil had similar problems and China is going thru it now.
This is an opportunity to be creative and stop blaming politicians. Behind every "crisis" lies great opportunies. Good luck for those who are leaving the country as there is no better place than RSA. Amandla - Martin |

Can not believe it 29/01/2008 07:28
Goverment and Eskom already admitted their mistakes and now Zuma tells the International community the opposite.I gave him the benefit of the doubt, hoping that he will show character and integrity but it was all in vain.It is a sad day for South Africa and a clear indication of what the future hold for all South Africans. - Disappointed |

Misleading the people 29/01/2008 07:28
The statement made by Mr Zuma is misleading the international comunity. The real facts about Eskom is that they cannot supply sufficient electricity due to a lack of maintenance of their equipment and a lack of good quality coal to produce electricity. This came about as a result of AA and BEE and also the incentives given to management to increase profit and cash flow to qualifty for large bonusses. The capacity utilisation at Eskom is currently running at 72% which indicates poor management. - Stormin |

Load shedding - Growing economy the problem. 29/01/2008 07:34
Mr. Zuma, I have to agree with Jacqui. To say that the growing economy is the cause of the load shedding problem is like saying: "My car running out of petrol is an "unintended consequence" of driving to far. This indicates that you didn't have the intellectual capacity to work out that you had to put in fuel. The ANC did not have the ability to work out that power generation facilities is needed to sustain growth, even though they were told that by knowledgeable individuals. - Ant |

Lack of forethought 29/01/2008 07:35
I agree with Zuma on the poor planning issue. I however DON'T agree with him that we'll be able to pull off the 2010 WC without a hitch. Claims have it that it will take at least 7 years to get everything back on track. We may have enough electricity to run the stadiums and tv networks for 2010, but what about the hotels and homes that tourists/locals have to retire to afterwards? I'm sure that will confirm the term "darkest Africa" for those comming from abroad. - Currently Disadvantaged |

Zuma, oh no Response 2 29/01/2008 07:37
Nick, where do you come from? Stating economic growth as a reason when in fact it was the total lack of planning from Government on the one hand and Eskom's inability to effectivily run its own affairs on the other hand comes down the hiding the truth - IN OTHERS WORDS LYING!!! Wake up and smell the coffee - "little" lack of maintenance - please man!!! - Johan |

who do we blame...? 29/01/2008 07:39
Guys, most townships never had electricity - who's at fault then? You can't entirely blame the current regime - old order must be man enough by assuming responsibility...Zille and her racist DA were sitting and doing what - watching: they are at fault as well. it is all of us's fault...period and blaming each other is not going to stop the black out... - ayanda |

Blablabla 29/01/2008 07:46
Growing economy=demand for more power=more power stations.
You need little common sense to work this out. Yet the ANC led government were not capable to do the math.
Instead of accepting the blame for their poor planning and mismanagement the blameshift again.
Typical.

Rhetorical bumph 29/01/2008 07:50
All this rhetoric to hide the fact it was the ANC collective that is so knowledeable that put a stop to Eskoms expansion plans. The ANC then transformed out the senior management and replaced them with ANC comrades who proceeded to take out as much as they could in dividends and increased their bonusses by cutting down on staff. The senior management don't give a damn as they collect their fat paycheques and bonusses. The ANC is totally to blame for the jobs being lost and the businesses closing. - JC |

How can u believe this @:?"?^$*(& 29/01/2008 08:04
Zuma has once again shown his intelligence, how can he make such an excuse, by even mentioning that...quote' Zuma said: "The strides we have made since 1994 in growing our economy and improving the quality of life of our people have brought along such a serious pressure on our energy sources...unquote.
If this is true then what have the fatcats been doing in developing strategies for the last 14 years.
The ball is gathering momentum along the downhill run, watch out.

Zuma, lying or ignorant or incompetent, either way we all are in trouble. 29/01/2008 08:15
The Europeans of Zurich, like the Europeans of SA, know the truth.
Why is it that the ambiguous lie is always told to cover for incompetence?
If the ANC/DA/whoever do not make themselves accountable for their actions then what is the possible future for the millions of us in RSA?
European and other investors will ask is the ANC lying or incompetent. Either way it's pretty bad.

Electricity 29/01/2008 08:27
I emigrated to RSA last year and am well aware of the electrical problems being encountered, but unfortunately the horse "bolted" too long ago. Quote: "The strides we have made since 1994 in growing our economy and improving the quality of life of our people have brought along such a serious pressure on our energy sources." Unquote. The lives of which people are you referring to, Zuma, definately not your supporters - maybe the black elite but nobody else. You mention the growing economy, the 3.5 million new house, yet the government still takes 10 years to realise they stuffed up the escom report. The world is not a fool!!!! - JD |
