Scorpions to be disbanded
12/02/2008 16:11  - (SA)

  • Mbeki fights for Scorpions
  • Hope for Scorpions?
  • Closing Scorpions 'dangerous'
  • Cape Town - The Scorpions and the police's organised crime fighting unit will be disbanded to form a "reconstructed" unit, Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula said in Parliament on Tuesday.

"The Scorpions will be dissolved and the organised crime unit of the police will be phased out and a new amalgamated unit will be created," he said during a debate on President Thabo Mbeki's state of the nation address.

The "best experience" of the two bodies would be merged.

This, he said, was part of a "holistic approach" to the revamp of the criminal justice system, which would have organised crime as one of its main priorities.

"We need proper measures, better human and material resources to achieve our goals in the fight against all crime," Nqakula said.

The new "reconstructed" unit sounds great. To the man in the street, it will make no difference. To the dodgy leaders, it will be great! - That`s great!

Surely there will be such strict 'guidelines' on who can and can't be investigated that the only people they will be empowered to investigate is hawkers and flea-market-stall owners who either shortchange their customers or have price-fixing-schemes with neighbouring stalls involving the price of flip-flops and bumper stickers. I am sure these guys will have an oath as well - 'I pledge to turn a blind eye to the crimes of our previously disadvantaged struggle heroes.....' - YeahRight
