ANC: Castro a 'living legend'
20/02/2008 19:10  - (SA)

  • Castro quits as Cuban president
  • Johannesburg - Cuban President Fidel Castro is a living legend, the African National Congress said on Wednesday.

The party paid tribute to Castro - who stepped down on Tuesday - saying it wished him health and happiness in his retirement.

"The Cuban people under the leadership of President Castro have displayed selfless internationalist commitment to the liberation of the oppressed people of Africa broadly and South Africa specifically," the party said in a statement.

"Not only have they contributed to the transformation of our country but have continued to support our reconstruction and development efforts in South Africa by sending their doctors to work among our people, particularly in the rural areas," it added.

The ANC said it drew strength from the commitment Castro showed to the liberation of countries in Africa.

It also noted his deployment of more than 300 000 Cuban troops to Angola to assist the country and Umkhonto weSizwe in the battle against the SA Defence Force.

The battle became known as Cuito Cuanavale.
