Union: 1 more public holiday
11/03/2008 17:14 - (SA)
Pretoria - The Federation of Unions of South Africa (Fedusa) on Tuesday asked President Thabo Mbeki to add a day to the country's public holidays.
Fedusa general secretary Dennis George said in a statement that the union was asking for the extra public holiday day because Human Rights Day and Good Friday fell on the same day, March 21.
He said that although provision was made in the Public Holidays Act number 36 of 1994 for public holidays which fell on a Sunday, there was nothing about public holidays falling on the same day.
The union said the commemoration of Good Friday and Human Rights Day was of "vital" importance to South Africans, adding that if it was not implemented, it would deprive workers a day of paid leave.
The union proposed that March 20 be deemed a public holiday so as to commemorate Human Rights Day.
"This would mean an Easter weekend with an extra day in 2008," said George.
