  • May 2 holiday a bad idea
  • SA set to get May 2 off too
  • March 21 issue not resolved yet
  • May 2 a public holiday?
  • 2 holidays for the price of 1
  • Union: 1 more public holiday
  • Pretoria - Cabinet has declared May 2 a public holiday, the department of Government Communications said on Wednesday.

"Yes, it has," government spokesperson Themba Maseko said when asked to confirm an earlier report.

He said a statement would be released to the media later on Wednesday.

Earlier this week, media reported that President Thabo Mbeki would not declare this Thursday a public holiday - despite calls from Cosatu and Fedusa - but would instead give South Africans a day off on May 2.

The call to government was made because Human Rights Day and Good Friday fall on the same day - this Friday.

      Pathetic productivity
    19/03/2008 14:55
I am disgusted at this decision, we have so many holidays and such low productivity in this country, why burden the businesses even more? I believe it is time to cut all employees salary by a similar amount for the month. I worked in the UK and we worked - hard. South Africans are lazy and always in need of holidays. It is time for a wakeup call. - TheOne

      2MAY 2008 PUBLIC HOLIDAY
    19/03/2008 15:11
i DONT THINK ITS ABOUT BEING LAZY MORE THAN TO AKNOWLEDGE THE HUMAN RIGHT, AS SOUTH AFRICANS WE HAVE A HISTORY REGARDING MARCH OF WHICH THAT IS WHY ITS BEEN REGARDED AS A HOLIDAY SINCE, EVERY ONE HAVE A RIGHT TO THE OWN POINT OF VIEW, - CONCERNED NOT LAZY SOUTH AFRICAN

      Nothing Pathetic about Public Holidays
    19/03/2008 15:12
South Aficans are hard workers and deserve a break to do their house chores...spend time with their children. Better to sit at home than to go to work where power will cut off. The greedy one's may suffer becouse they are greedy. - Mpumi D

      2nd May '08 P/Holiday
    19/03/2008 15:12
Agree with the fact that we don't need another P/holiday! But, please........I have also lived and worked in the UK and I worked hard as a South African. The English are lazy and always in need of holidays. Brett - Brett Harris

      Pathetic TheOne
    19/03/2008 15:13
Geez Mr TheOne, we're so sorry that we haven't been brainwashed by big business that we're supposed to be slave driven until we die. We'll try harder next time to get upset when we can't work because of a public holiday. We're also sorry that we can't match the hard-working standards of the UK. Please, accept our humbly apologies  - TheTwo

      Re: Pathetic productivity
    19/03/2008 15:13
South Africans were the highest level of productivity, until load shedding came into effect. In my opinion South Africans are very hard workers. It the Uk community that is lazy. - Piet

Why be a doos and generalize about all South Africans - that is the biggest problem with us, we like to generalize. Anyway, I'm sure there are plenty S-Africans who will be working irrespective. - Kev

      LOL
    19/03/2008 15:16
TheOne, you can moan all you want, nothing will change. Cosatu is part of the tripartheid alliance, so when they say jump, you are almost certain goverment will say how high Why do you think they are able to strike every month of every year? Grow up, saying nothing will piss them off even more - Dawid

      Learn from Europe
    19/03/2008 15:17
This is the reason why I left SA. There are too many people that does not care enough about the country, but more about themselves and their own comfort. Coz it is nice to have an "eh-holliedey". Working in the UK taught me a lot about what a workforce can do for the economy, if they just wanted to. Farewell SA, you have just gone from "homeland status" to "holiday only destination" status for me! - Happy X-Pat

      Pathetic Productivity Two
    19/03/2008 15:19
Whats your problem - we usually have two public holidays anyway - so actually we are staying the same as every other year in the past. Good God - go back to the UK where its weather is as wet and miserable as you are. - TheTwo

      May 2nd a public holiday
    19/03/2008 15:19
I think its pathetic...so what if the two days happen to fall on the same date. There are already way to many holidays around this time... It doesn't really affect me as I work for a boss, so I'm just getting another day off. - Shana

May 2 declared a public holiday
    19/03/2008 15:21
Hell no TheOne. And who died and made you our President. In the UK you probably worked your butt off and got what you deserved and paid for it. So what are you doing here. Bye bye - Sybil

      you are pathetic
    19/03/2008 15:23
you know why you work hard in UK, Is simple because your in a foreign country. Even a holiday you won't notice it coz u will be working just like any othet foreign person who is in South Africa. i am in favour of this not because i am lazy but for the fact that 21st of February is double holidays and union feel cheated. So if you have problem with this just stay in your UK. - Makosho

      TheOne - Your problem
    19/03/2008 15:27
You call us lazy peolpe, it is really your problem and you better sort yourself out. We realise the need to rest and enjoy our hard earned cash, and this is how we do it in style. - Carol

      Ban the unions!
    19/03/2008 15:28
Cutting pay to make up for the public holiday/s is not going to resolve anything - productivity and production still suffers. If anything, the impact would have been less if the public holiday was instead granted in the middle of the week. This only entices people to take the two days off in between, worsening the impact on production/productivity. It's time government stops being dictated to by trade unions. - stephan

      No work... no pay!
    19/03/2008 15:28
More Public Holidays, sitting on your backside or riding the Gravy-train.... welcome to South Africa! - VannerMerwe

      PRODUCTIVITY
    19/03/2008 15:29
Why does the government not make a Monday or a Friday a public holiday, like in Britain. - Theo Mckenzie

      Paid Holiday
    19/03/2008 15:33
I am stunned, but I suppose not surprised at this decision. It is so typical of "organised labour", sole purpose is to try and get as much as possible for nothing. But one can never loose sight of who actually put the present, and previous and next Government in power!!! This getting out of hand, time to drastically reduce the ridiculous number of annualpublic holidays. - Hendrik Schutte

if you feel feel you worked hard in the UK,then go back to your UK and stop stop grouping people.South african also fought hard for these rights. - South african

      The One
    19/03/2008 15:38
Pipe down, Mister. The 2nd is on a Friday and chances are that productivity would have been very low anyway. Furthermore, this does not mean there will be no working where it is necessary. It simply means people will be paid overtime if they work. Go back to the UK - L van Heerden

      Disagree...
    19/03/2008 15:39
South African's have to deal with much more than a UK citizen counterpart. Crime, cost of living, Bills, corrupt politicians, gangster-ism, drugs, poverty, racism, kids coming to school with weapons and the list goes on.. We are a stressed out bunch of people. In fact people work too much. We should be working an absolute maximum 35 hours weekly. Further, you cannot generalize that all SA's are lazy. Everyone has different values about working hard, quality of life etc. - Nat

      Wakeup "Pathetic productivity"
    19/03/2008 15:43
For those us who work hard that don't see our familys as often as we like the holiday is well deserved! Damn workaholic's like you irritate me! - Tyrone

      Need a break
    19/03/2008 15:44
How much annual leave do people in the UK get? I get 2 weeks. - Think again

      TheOne
    19/03/2008 15:52
Lets get something straight here. For those of us that get paid double on public holidays it makes a big difference. Think a bit of the not so lucky person in the street, who provides services that you might depend on during that time. Besides how many people were not already planning on taking leave in that period and making a long weekend of it? so when people naturally take leave to make longer weekends longer then they are too being lazy? Get real. 1 more thing major shops will prob be open! - Nic the Greek

      Re; Pathethic Productivtiy
    19/03/2008 15:53
To The One Why dont' you do the SAfricans a favour and go back to UK Cut Salaries?! - what you want a war? For the "L.O.G" - get a life and stop bitching Go back to the cold UK and leave us SAfricans alone you nimwit We are not lazy! Dumbass - Darius Gray

      Tough one
    19/03/2008 15:54
With Eskom keeping us in the dark, and the fuel price keeping us grounded, it is like a paid holiday at work anyway, the global economic outlook is depressed, will another holiday push it over the edge? Hmmm, most people in my opinion will make it a long weekend and that can't be all bad for the shops, mind you, the shops might just be closed because of the power cuts-Life's a beach - Durbslaw

      Productivity
    19/03/2008 15:57
Funny how Cosatu and the likes think they can rule the country. Do these people ever think what this does to our already struggling economy? Or is it just too comfortable to sit on your lazy ass for the duration of yet another public holiday? Being part of the New South Africa also comes with the resposibility of working together to make it work. Eish! - Skubbe

      Just plain CRAZY
    19/03/2008 15:59
Just another knock out to the economy?? PLS mister president - change all holidays to fall on a Monday or Friday, eg last Monday of June or 2nd Friday of April as opposed to fixed dates. You can leave Christmas and New Year! - john
