Cape Town - Political and business communities were abuzz over the possibility that those who broke the law during the government's controversial arms deal could get amnesty if they spilled the beans.
Amnesty suggestions have been made behind the scenes the last while and although nothing has been signed or officially announced, it was clear that this possibility was being considered.
What opinion makers would like to find out, was the extent to which amnesty would be regarded as a cover-up and the extent to which it would be experienced as the conclusion of irritating transgressions of the past that were inhibiting the country's growth in exchange for the truth.
The only person who legally could set the wheels in motion for this kind of amnesty was President Thabo Mbeki.
Mbeki's spokesperson Mukoni Ratshitanga said that he was not aware of any plans for an amnesty process.
From sources in political as well as prominent local and international business circles, it was gathered in the last while that the possibility of an amnesty similar to that of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was being considered.
Enquiries were being done to find out how the public might react to this kind of amnesty.
