Mbeki must get involved - DA

Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance urged President Thabo Mbeki on Thursday to take the lead in ensuring that Zimbabwean elections did not degenerate into violence and destruction.
"As President Mbeki was mandated by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to mediate between the two parties in Zimbabwe, it is reasonable to expect him to play an active part in ensuring the success of post-election talks," said DA parliamentary leader Sandra Botha.
It would be wrong for Mbeki not to be directly involved in talks going on between Zanu-PF and the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).
"Indications from the Presidency that South Africa is not directly involved in supporting the deliberations between the MDC and Zanu-PF about a future dispensation in Zimbabwe, are of great concern.
"South Africa cannot sit back while the prospect of thousands of Zimbabweans being turned into instant refugees looms, should post-election talks in Zimbabwe fail and violence break out as a result," Botha said.
