  • Johannesburg - The ANC on Thursday called on the Zimbabwean Electoral Commission (ZEC) to release the presidential election results "as soon as possible".

"We also call on all parties to address whatever concerns they may have through the appropriate legal channels," the party said in a statement.

Zimbabweans voted on March 29 but the presidential election results have not yet been released by the ZEC.

Zanu-PF's opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said its candidate, Morgan Tsvangirai, won the vote outright, and accused President Robert Mugabe of delaying the results so he could have a run-off - and give ruling party militants time to intimidate voters and ensure he wins a second election.

Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa on Wednesday called an emergency summit of the Southern African development Community (SADC) for Saturday to discuss Zimbabwe's political crisis.

The ANC said it hoped that the SADC summit would contribute to a resolution.

"The ANC welcomes the announcement that a summit of SADC leaders is to be held to discuss the current situation in Zimbabwe and we hope it will reinforce the SADC guidelines on free and fair elections."
