Zim situation 'more worrying'
16/04/2008 19:26 - (SA)
Johannesburg ? ANC president Jacob Zuma said on Wednesday that reports of violence from neighbouring Zimbabwe made the situation there more worrying.
"The region cannot afford a deepening crisis in Zimbabwe. The situation is more worrying now given the reported violence that has erupted in the country," Zuma said in a speech to business leaders outside Johannesburg.
Tensions have been steadily mounting in Zimbabwe over the presidential results of the March 29 poll which have yet to be released.
The opposition Movement for Democratic (MDC) has reported intimidation of its supporters, and says two of its members were killed by supporters of President Robert Mugabe over the weekend in politically motivated murders.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we once again register our apprehension about the situation in Zimbabwe. The delay in the verification process and the release of results increases anxiety each day," said Zuma.
Zuma and the ANC have taken a tough stance on the unfolding crisis, in sharp contrast to that of its former leader, SA President Thabo Mbeki. He said this weekend there was "no crisis" in Zimbabwe.
Widely criticised for his policy of quiet diplomacy towards Mugabe, whom he met on Saturday in Harare while on his way to a regional summit to discuss the post-election situation, Mbeki's party has directly contradicted his views.
Zuma urged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to resolve the matters without delay.
