Cape Town - The South African Police Service is not experiencing any staff shortages concerning police personnel, according to Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula.
Giving a written reply to a question in the National Assembly, the minister told Haniff Hoosen of the Independent Democrats that the police had recruited 11 360 members at entry level. The target of 173 120 members set for the end of the 2007/08 financial year was achieved.
Nor does the police service suffer from staff shortages in respect of administrative back-up staff. "The 3 200 positions that were available in the 2007/08 financial year were all filled to ensure support capacity as provided for in the human resources plan." Nqakula said.
However the minister did admit to having a shortage of 10 forensic investigators including DNA experts in the forensic science laboratories.
"In the present financial year, 199 posts of forensic analysts (which includes forensic investigators and DNA experts) were filled," he said.
"Another 100 posts for forensic analysts have been advertised as a first phase for 2008/09 and the selection of candidates will be completed soon."
But, he told his questioner, there was no shortage of accountants or lawyers.
As for psychologists, he said the police service was not experiencing staff shortages. "Positions in this field are advertised to attract officials with the required skills to join the service," he said. "However, the SAPS is experiencing a high personnel turnover with members of personnel leaving the service for lucrative offers outside the public sector."
