'Brave leadership' needed

Johannesburg - The African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL) needed to elect a leadership that would be brave, bold and decisive to champion women's rights, the SABC reported on Saturday.
Political analyst Mohau Pheko told SABC news the ANCWL delegates needed to elect leaders "without feeling that they have to back so and so or they have to move away from certain positions because they will fall out of favour with certain people who they view as being in power.
"The previous leadership was rather cowardly and I think what this new leadership needs to come out with is a very brave, very bold and very decisive leadership that really holds up the banner of women's rights."
Close to 4 000 delegates were expected to elect the league's top five leaders to form a new National Executive Committee on Saturday in Bloemfontein.
Former league president, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, failed to secure a nomination for the position of president.
The post was being contested by the league's secretary-general Bathabile Dlamini and Gauteng Education MEC Angie Motshega.
