Johannesburg - The two South African relief workers detained in Uganda will be deported back home, the Foreign Affairs Department said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said South Africa's High Commissioner Henry Chiliza had been informed by the Ugandan authorities that the two men would be deported on Friday.

The two are expected in the country on Friday morning.

Mamoepa said the two were not charged by the Ugandan authorities.

"There were no grounds for their deportation," Mamoepa said.

He said once they arrived in South Africa they would be "free to go".

The South African government had extended its gratitude to the Ugandan authorities for releasing the two, said Mamoepa.

Mufti Hussain Bhayat, of Lenasia, and Haroon Saley, of Azaadville, were arrested last week during a stopover at Kampala's Entebbe International Airport.

They were being held at the offices of Uganda's joint security.
