SA politicians don't 'click'
Obama did. But experts say local political parties don't understand the value of a techno-savvy campaign.
DA: We didn't copy Obama
Some say the DA's new logo bears a striking resemblance to a logo we've seen before.

Pretoria - President Kgalema Motlanthe wants to build on the "good work" done by former president Thabo Mbeki, and will not allow the government to lose sight of its objectives.

Motlanthe addressed the nation for the first time in a live television broadcast on Sunday evening.

He tried to reassure South Africans by emphasising that the government's focus in the coming months would be on the mandate it received in 2004.

    'Move forward'

"The past few days have proven the durability of South Africa's constitutional order and the vibrancy of its democracy. We have no choice now other than to move forward, to forge ahead undaunted with the tasks we have set ourselves."

Motlanthe's speech follows ANC president Jacob Zuma's denial on Saturday that Mbeki's resignation had caused a crisis in the ANC.

Deputy President Baleka Mbete had added that disgruntled ANC members who wanted to form a new party were "wasting their time".

Motlanthe referred to the "incredible" contribution Mbeki made to the advancement of the country. "We have to thank him, his leadership and vision for all the successes of the last decade.

"We can say now with confidence that this government... has indeed made significant progress in fulfilling this mandate."

But there was still much work to be done to improve the lives of South Africans, he said. He committed himself to continued economic growth, as well as job creation and greater access to education and quality health care.

    Crime, violence, abuse, poverty

"We are determined to eradicate crime, violence and abuse - regardless of who it affects."

The government will also focus on the alleviation of poverty.

In addition, the government would continue playing a positive role in international institutions and strive for "peace, safety, democracy and development in Africa".

Motlanthe called on all South Africans to stand together at this critical point in the country's history to help the government create a better South Africa.

"We have no doubt that, if we work together, we could present the best Soccer World Cup in 2010."

    Equal rights

The government will dedicate itself daily to ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all South Africans.

"In line with the Freedom Charter, South Africa belongs to all the people living here, black and white. No government can insist on power if it is not based on the will of all the people. The government's vision is therefore all-encompassing.

"And just as we all have an equal claim to this country, we all have an equal obligation to build a society that is united, democratic, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous," he said.

Motlanthe assured the nation that the government's work would not be interrupted. It is important that the country's democracy remained stable.

He added that the government was not going to allow the nation to lose confidence in its ability to meet people's needs.

"Never before has South Africa been closer than it is today towards the achievement of a united, democratic, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous nation. Together, we can only succeed."

    - Beeld

It's all good so lets see if he can back up those words with decisive action, such as agreeing to a fully independent Commission of Enquiry into the Arms Deal saga..I for one am patiently waiting for his response to see if he will allow it,as Judge Nicholson, the 'sober'judge, also felt that an investigation is necessary. - Wonderboy

      Positive comments
    29/09/2008 08:36
Lets see if we can't start our week with some positive comments rather than the old bitch and moan that we are accustomed to. The new presidents intentions are a good sign and hope that all can work together to carry it through. Problem is that too many people sit back and say this is not my choice of government so I will sit back, do nothing and amuse myself when things don't work. Unfortunatley these same don't give any credit where its due. So please keep the negative stuff to yourselves. - Brad

      Wow

Yet another rivetting episode of our soap opera. Look how quickly Motlanthe has become a real, live, genuine politician - big speech without the will to back it up. Awesome. Have a marvelous Monday SA :-) - Stephen

      Crime & poverty
    29/09/2008 08:41
We need to be heard as ordinary South Africans. Crime has made us slaves in our beloved country. Hence we need to revisit the tendency of concurrent criminal sentences as it has proved to be a failure. If you sentence a criminal for 20yrs murder, 15yrs rape, 9yrs theft; let the sentences run one after the other. The health system also needs serious attention. Basically, the whole public administration system should be performance driven, salaries should be strictly based commision. - Diale

      nothing was expected
    29/09/2008 08:44
It will be naive of us to expect something new from the president. The man will only be here for 6 months and he is forced to continue with the policy of his predecessor.SA will be happy if he can move at high speed in order to push service delivery.I wish that Zuma can be arrested so that this man can unify members of the ANC,I know my views might not be popular with his people but the truth is we need a strong ANC.Lets give Motlanthe a space to breath and lets see how far he goes. - kgauzen

Of all the changes that took place last week, we should all give thanks for the removal of Dr Beetroot to a place where she can`t do no harm to the country. The presidency is one of those portfolios created just to make up the numbers. - nathinyce
