Cape Town - The Democratic Alliance's (DA's)
Helen Zille became Cape Town's new mayor on Wednesday after a council meeting held to elect a mayor, a speaker as well as other portfolios.
Zille replaces African National Congress (ANC) mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo.
Zille was elected by 106 votes to 103.
Tension-laden proceedings of the Cape Town city council were temporarily adjourned to allow parties to caucus.
The adjournment was requested by the ANC and the Independent Democrats after their candidate for the post of Speaker was defeated by the combined vote of the DA and smaller parties.
It also came amid confusion over whether the council had actually adopted rules of procedure, as called for by the formal agenda.
