Cape Town - In the middle of a power cut that left everyone at a traffic light confused, actress Vicky Davis of 7de Laan fame also had to contend with a smash-and-grab thief.

For Vicky, who portrayed Tessa in 7de Laan for two years, everything came to a crunch on Friday evening.

First, there was the power cut that left Cape Town in darkness, then there were confused motorists who weren't sure about their turns to go through the robots, and then a thief ran off with her handbag after snatching it through her car window.

"Look, it was chaos. I was on the way to a friend's house in Green Point. It was almost 24:00. Everything was pitch black.

"People were confused about whose turn it was at the robots. I was getting ready to turn right when someone who looked like a beggar appeared next to me.

    Everything was in her bag

"I told him to push off, but he just stood there. Suddenly, he broke my passenger window and grabbed my handbag," said Vicky on Sunday.

"Luckily, a police car was passing and I stopped them and told them about the bag-snatcher," she said.

"I was confused and couldn't phone anyone, because my cellphone was in my bag. Everything was in it. My camera, my driver's licence, my purse. Everything."

She was on the way to meet a friend in Green Point and decided to drive there and phone her mom with the friend's cellphone.

"I immediately cancelled my cards and also phoned my mom."

Thanks to the quick actions of a police constable, Vicky's handbag was returned to her with all its contents.

"I couldn't believe it when my mom phoned me later and told me my handbag had been found.

"A policeman who was on duty that night had seen someone suspicious walking past, stopped him and asked him to lift his bulky jersey. It was my handbag under his jersey!" Vicky told Die Burger.

"The man was arrested. The policeman, Constable WP van Wyk, called a number on my cellphone, and got hold of my mom.

"I went to the police station in the city to make a statement on Sunday. Apparently the man has been arrested on a similar charge before," she said.

"One sometimes loses faith in the system. But, this officer's action has given me new hope.

    More relaxed in Cape Town

"Actually, I'm angry with myself for leaving my handbag on the passenger seat.

"In Johannesburg, I was always so careful. But, here in Cape Town, one feels more relaxed, safer."

Vicky is doing freelance work at present and is involved in a possible film version of Orgie by André P Brink.

"It's still in the initial phase. We've done a flyer that's on YouTube. But we're still looking for funds to make the movie."

    - Die Burger
