Nelspruit - Eskom is preparing to use three of its coal-fired power stations in Mpumalanga at full throttle.
Eskom media spokesperson Nokwethemba Khumalo said the Camden power station near Ermelo, Grootvlei power station near Balfour and Komati power station near Middelburg are being refurbished and brought back into full operation at a cost of R16bn.
Camden power station, which is currently running on six of its eight units and produces 1 600 mega watts of energy, is scheduled to be fully operational at the end of June.
The Grootvlei power station will be fully operational by 2009 and Komati will be fully operational by 2010.
The power stations were closed in the 1980s when South Africa had an excess electricity supply.
The country's current power shortages has resulted in the need to returned the power stations to full service.
In Limpopo, a new Eskom coal-fired power station, called the Medupi plant, will be built near Lephalale at a cost of R78bn.
The building of the 4 200 mega watt power plant was announced in 2007 and construction is expected to be completed by 2015.
