  • Johannesburg - The largest owner of property on behalf of the government will accelerate efforts to save power, the Department of Public Works said on Tuesday.

"The largest property owner on behalf of government and its departments, the National Department of Public Works will ... spearhead accelerated efforts to implement the energy efficiency programme in all government-owned and government-leased buildings," said Lucky Mochalibane, the department's spokesperson.

"The department will promote efficient individual use of air conditioners and heaters as opposed to centralised systems, installation of energy efficient bulbs, card controlled devices and motion detectors in government-owned and leased buildings," he said.

The department would, in addition, formulate new specifications on newly acquired properties making them energy-efficiency compliant.

The department has recommended almost 20 energy saving guidelines for immediate implementation for all government buildings, except where there are security considerations such as at police stations, military installations, the Union Buildings and around the residences of the members of the Executive.

Incandescent lights are being replaced by energy-efficient bulbs in the houses of ministers, said Mochalibane.
