  • Cape Town - Eskom has applied for a 53% hike in tariffs, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) announced on Tuesday.

It said it had received the application earlier on Tuesday.

Eskom was seeking this in place of the 14.2% increase it was granted in December last year.

Eskom had said it wanted the figure revised because of "increased primary energy costs" and "accelerated demand side management" costs.

"In the light of the current electricity supply shortage and load shedding in the country, the energy regulator will give urgent attention to Eskom's application and make its decision after following due process," Nersa said.

      Price Hikes
    18/03/2008 17:56
How on earth can they expect consumers to foot the bill for their inefficiency when their top brass got rewarded so handsomely for their well below par performance, or are they looking to make sure they make enough money to pay them more bonnuses? - Quinton

      Eskom
    18/03/2008 18:04
What a joke.....how can Alec Erwin stand up and say that this will not have an effect on the economy. What is he smoking? No new houses, 53% increases....this is just to much for me. - craig illman

      Revision
    18/03/2008 18:06
If the management at Eskom had done their work properly, and not worry about their performance bonuses we wouldn't be in the crap we are in now....wake up this should have been sorted out years ago, take off your blinkers and work for your money. - shaun

      53% hike?? Crazy.....X@!%^&^$......!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    18/03/2008 18:07
We are now forced to pay for "Ek'sdom's" lack of foresight! How can we keep up with all the increases!! I earn a decent salary but still cant keep up. Stop paying bonuses to Eskom management for non performance and put that money to good use.!!!!!!!!!!! I dont want to be negative but we are on a downward spiral. - Michael

      Eskom management
    18/03/2008 18:07
It seems Eskom management is way too expensive for their efficiency. LOL! "accelerated demand side management" costs Nothing accelerated, Eskom fell behind on supplying energy. The demand has been steadily growing since the invention of electricity. - Zoltan

    18/03/2008 18:18
Why should the consumer be taxed additionally by Eskom, when they can afford to pay non-performing staff performance bonuses running into millions of rands? S.A. consumers need to wake up and show these leeches that the real power is in the hands of the consumer, not the corporations. As it is, S.A. is the most highly taxed country in the world, when you look at both direct and indirect taxation, and there is very little to show for it. - Peter

      Eskom madness
    18/03/2008 18:19
How could eskom even start to justify the big bonus handed down to their managers and then not even 2 weeks later expect a astronomical increase in tariffs. Perhaps personal gain instead of sound business policy has won the day. - juan

      Wake up!!!
    18/03/2008 18:33
Anybody who can get out of SA should do so as soon as possible. The writing is on the wall. Citizens have no say and we are all being robbed blind. Enough already. Get out and watch the destruction from a first world country. - Cheryl

    18/03/2008 18:39
It is time we stood up against this type of minipulation. Can I suggest mass peaceful gatherings at the doors of parliament, Eskoms main offices, outside most mayors offices and the homes of all involved in this debacle. A message needs to be sent to the powers that be that we, the voters, are reaching a breaking point, and that those who are responsible for this situation need to cover all inflated costs for electricity. Please don't threaten us any longer. - dino

      No choice
    18/03/2008 18:53
It seems every week there is another rediculous report of the south african people being mistreated and exploited, is there anything we can honestly do about this? We get mad and moan but this doesnt scare government or Eskom, were screwed! - Shaun

      pop!! there goes economy
    18/03/2008 18:59
you have got to be kidding? is this eskoms contribution to wealth distribution. can you imagine the impact on the economy as produces pass this absurd increase to consumers?? inflation is going to kill us.. another 60c on the petrol price and 53percent on elec.. interest rates will at 26percent soon. - aelric

      Eskom Price Increase
    18/03/2008 18:59
Petrol has gone up x%, Electricity proposed increase of 53%. Dear boss, may I please also have a 53% increase and a fat bonus? Think not!! - Barry

      Crazy
    18/03/2008 19:05
This is totally crazy. The fact that even the thought is entertained is beyond comprehension. Alec Erwin should have been fired after the "sabotage at Koeberg" incident. He is even more incompetent than Manto and the Ivy. Eskom should be forced to raise the most of their money as in decades past by borrowing against their assets - that is how business does it. A 53% increase would kill the economy, industry and cripple all citizens. Government should wake up and fire Eskom (mis-)Management! - Gideon

      I'll do it
    18/03/2008 19:09
OK, ok ok...I'll do it...Pay me 25K a month and I'll sort out the electricity problem..I don't want a bonus. What would it help? With the electricity shortage I wouldn't be able to watch the rugby on my newly acquired 150inch HDTV. I don't need the bonus, can't keep the beers cold in my triple decker fridge anyway... - Jurgs

      Lack of sleep for Alec
    18/03/2008 19:18
Alec, you should take the advice of your superiors and go sleep earlier. You might just wake up a bit more cleverer and stop speaking crap. You dont know your ass from your elbow. All you big shots in Eskom should consider employing the right people for the job, and agree to a 50% salary cut so that can pay them....But it's so nice when the lights are on but no one's home.- Alfie - A. Dunn

      Up the economy
    18/03/2008 19:28
Is it not funny how we suddenly have "load shedding" right before they apply for this ridiculous increase? Not only electricity prices will skyrocket, but also everything you buy in the shops!!! Milk the consumer, that is guvvermunt's motto. Rather let the state pay for their bugger up (even if it is with our tax money... which they are too incompetent to spend on roads and health care, etc) - hfr

      price hike
    18/03/2008 19:34
53% - for bigger bonuses for the top management? best route to go is gas and generators for the near future. i am going to replace my electric stove and fridge with gas and buy a generator for the rest, and let someone just complain about the generator noise...... - Christina

      Eishkom
    18/03/2008 19:59
Eskom has as much chance of getting a 53% increase as Robert Mugabe has of going to heaven! This year they are getting 14.2% which is already too much. I'm prepared to cut my elec usage by 10% or more - I'm already doing it - but not a fxxk will i pay 53% more! Gus - Angus
