Johannesburg - Eskom hopes to reduce electricity usage by the equivalent of two power stations' output by 2025, the power company said on Wednesday.
Eskom chief executive Jacob Maroga said this at the signing in KwaThema of an agreement with the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry.
This would be achieved through changed usage behaviour and the use of alternative sources of electricity.
"As we reduce consumption of electricity, we also reduce the usage of water," Maroga said.
At the moment, Eskom consumed five percent of the country's fresh water resources.
"South Africa is a developing country that is water scarce.
"This emphasises the necessity and importance of water conservation and water demand management.
"Eskom is active in the field of electricity conservation and pursues the concepts with all its stakeholders," he said.
Maroga said the national Departments of Minerals and Energy and Public Enterprises, and Eskom would soon launch a power conservation programme.
This would "look at how we can move out of the current shortage of electricity and reduce the probability of load shedding, and in the future use prices and quotas to manage demand".
