Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni says that he sympathises with Eskom's need to raise the price of electricity.

But, he said that there has to be another way to make sure that Eskom's infrastructure build is financed without putting pressure on inflation.

Mboweni was responding to questions from parliamentarians about Eskom's request for a 60% electricity price hike.

Mboweni would not say what these other options were. But, he said that officials from the central bank had already met with Eskom.

He would also meet with them to discuss options. He did not want to share his thoughts publicly before he had done so with the energy utility.

But, he also added that the ultimate decision would be Eskom's and Minister of Public Enterprises, Alec Erwin's.
