Power hike protest planned
28/03/2008 16:40 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The SA Communist Party (SACP) is planning a protest against the proposed tariff hikes by Eskom, it announced on Friday.
"We will announce later when the protests will take place, we are consulting with all the stakeholders involved for the exact dates," said spokesperson Malesela Maleka.
Eskom has asked for its approved 14% tariff hike for 2008-2009 to be increased to 53%.
The SACP was angered by the proposed hike.
"Over the past months we have been given one explanation after the other about the electricity crisis, affirmations of plans to expand and stabilise our electricity supply, only to pass the buck to the poor and the working class of our country."
The SACP said it supported the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu)'s call for a moratorium on the planned increases because consumers were made to pay for the "irrational and senseless neo-liberal policies" government adopted in 1996 "in the form of GEAR".
Cosatu called on the government to place a moratorium on electricity tariff hikes or face protest action.
