Cape Town - "It's madness to expect South Africans to pay 60% more for electricity," says Baleka Mbete, the Speaker of Parliament.

At a media breakfast on Tuesday, Mbete responded to a question about Parliament's position on the 60% increase which was wanted by Eskom.

She said that, as a politician, she worked on the principle of obtaining information, trying to understand it and then being completely free to give an opinion on it.

"I would not like to come across as an expert in a field in which I'm not an expert at all.

"But, to me as a person, it sounds ridiculous to say that South Africans have to pay 60% more."

Mbete made it clear that this was her personal opinion.
