Johannesburg - Load shedding at short notice is a possibility this winter.

The same schedules that were used in April for planned load shedding will be used again this winter.

Eskom spokesperson Fani Zulu said on Tuesday that he recommended people check to see when load shedding would take place where they lived or worked.

Load shedding would apparently only be implemented because of unforeseen circumstances.

Eskom would use the media, especially radio, to inform people.

These circumstances included extreme cold, which increased demand, or errors at power stations which led to unplanned repair work.

Zulu named three strategies, which Eskom could follow to prevent load shedding.

Firstly some unplanned repair work could be delayed if Eskom suspected that cold weather could lead to a power shortage.

Eskom would secondly put great emphasis on power saving during these times.

Another plan was to have other power sources such as gas turbines, function at a higher capacity.

"The gas turbines are designed to function at 5% of their capacity. They should only be switched on during peak times but could be used in off-peak times," Zulu said.
