Power crisis: Big strike planned
05/06/2008 16:39 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Trade union federations Cosatu and Fedusa (Federation of Unions of SA) may embark on a protected strike over the electricity crisis, they said on Thursday.
In a statement, Cosatu spokesperson Patrick Craven said the National Economic Development and Labour Council considered the application under section 77 of the Labour Relations Act earlier on Thursday.
Section 77 pertains to protest action to promote or defend the socio-economic interests of workers.
"The meeting deemed the issue a matter that had to be considered, but reached a deadlock over the... danger of job losses arising from load-shedding by Eskom [and] retrenchments by employers as a result of Eskom tariff increases," said Craven.
He said Cosatu unions would meet on Friday to consider what forms of mass action it would be taking against which organisations.
