Shaik to lodge ConCourt appeal
15/12/2006 12:55 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Lawyers for convicted Durban businessman
Schabir Shaik were on Friday scrambling to lodge a Constitutional Court
appeal against his conviction and 15-year sentence for corruption and fraud.
Shaik's lawyer Reeves Parsee said he hoped to have lodged the
appeal with the Concourt by the end of Friday.
"We are finalising the documentation and we hope to submit it
today," Parsee said.
He declined to give any details of the appeal.
Shaik was found guilty of two counts of corruption and one count
of fraud in the Durban High Court in July 2005 by Judge Hilary
Squires. His appeal to a full bench of the Supreme Court of Appeals
upheld Squires' judgment on November 6.
He had 14 days from that date to file papers with the
Constitutional Court.
Shaik's lawyers will have to explain to the court why it should
accept the appeal after the prescribed time.
