Manuel 'willing to serve'

2008-09-23 14:02

Cape Town - Finance Minister Trevor Manuel is willing to serve in the new Cabinet, his spokesperson said on Tuesday.

This comes after Manuel announced his resignation from Cabinet along with 10 other Cabinet ministers and three deputy ministers earlier in the morning.

Manuel's spokesperson, Thoraya Pandy said he is still willing to serve the new administration in whatever way is possible.

Pandy made it clear that the minister believed his resignation was required because he served "at the pleasure of the President" and if the President resigns then he must too.

Why resign if he is willing to serve under new cabinet. All he achieved was for the stock market to take a blow! The bafoon!
Martin 9/23/2008 2:11:55 PM
The ANC NEC to come together and plan and think about something else than the new BMW they are all going to get from comrade JZ!

Im am a Zuma fan,but Im more of a SOUTH AFRICAN FAN.Zimbabwe get well my beloved counrty is coming your way.Trevor well done for the good job we already miss you look at the R V\S the $
LvH 9/23/2008 2:13:43 PM
Before calling people Bafoons, why not read properly? Since the President is resigning, everyone that served under him have to automatically retire. Just because people in the stock market react in a whim does not make the process any less clearer.

All this Cabinet ministers are cowards. This was never about them or the president,it was about the people of this country, the greater masses. How can he serve "at the pleasure of the President".it should be "at the pleasure of the people of this country".

It is a sign that ther are ministers who are here to serve for SA and south african.these large number of ministers who are regning to me is the sign that they are here for self enrichment eg musioua lekota(he made SA boaderless).those minister must go and never come back finally i am waiting for minister of safety and health to resign(so i can have a baby in well mantained hospital and safe south africa)
Afrikado 9/23/2008 2:18:43 PM
It appears to me that the office of the Presidency is responsible for the inflammatory nature of the announcement; or should this be blamed on the media? Is this the extent that Thabo Mbeki will go to rock the boat in his exit? All in love of power or the Republic?
Maanda 9/23/2008 2:20:12 PM
It means he is not reliable, so all these ministers can be happy to see our country going down. Most of them are planning to go oversees. Will they be happy to see our economy going down? Yes of course but they should remember that it affects everyone.
Mikey 9/23/2008 2:23:50 PM
The rest of the world couldn't give a damn who the pres is as long as minister of finance is capable, has a functional brain and know a few fundamentals about economic! Amazing nothing happened for the whole week and the second Trevor resigns kappffft the stock markets and the rand go spiraling.
Mbali Zibi 9/23/2008 2:26:34 PM
First Mo Shaik pisses on him, then they tell him that cabinet wants to approve his budget, then they fire the man with the vision of ecenomic growth...what did you expect from Trevor? The ANC is not thinking strategically. They are pushing their personal agendas, not serving the nation!!!!!!!!!People, please don't make ignorant statements like Harris above!
Ryan 9/23/2008 2:34:31 PM
I honesty don?t know what to think of this, Yes Mbeki made allot of mistakes, I trust him and all the guys who resigned more than the rest who is staying/ or coming into power. I mean the person who they want as president, nobody knows.. I spoke to peeps at the office, and they haven?t even a clue of who he is or where he comes from. I am a South African, but I am scared to think what is to take place here, and soon. Why didn?t Zuma fight to take Mbeki?s role, because he knows that SA persons will be able to judge him before the elections and see that he is a failure, thus he stood back knowing that he will have a longer term if he holds on a bit longer. I am sad to see Good persons go, and fear in anticipation as to what is on its way. Good luck to you all, and may God be with us! RQH

if Manuel says "at the pleasure of the President" then that means he served the president and himself not the South African community. This may prove that we had ignorant ministers who just served for thier personal gains now that there aren't any they are going. i was sad when Mbeki was recalled but now i am not.

Trevor will still be part of the zuma's administration. There is no doubt about that.Have to admit though, Trevor is a powerful man.The rand takes a knock when he resigns.. Trevor is superman
John Camp 9/23/2008 2:42:44 PM
Simple answer, after what we've seen the stock market do, he can now serve under his own conditions and price.
Jamie 9/23/2008 2:44:49 PM
The man is sending confused and conflicting messages. If JZ asked him to stay and he says he can serve in any capacity why is he resigning. He must just come out in the open. Most probably he is trying not to offend the new masters but at the same time feels uncomfortable to work with this new crowd
Sean 9/23/2008 2:51:21 PM
Given the shacky ground we all stand on here in S.A, I am simply grateful that Trevor has agreed to stay. The truth is that "the market" and foriegn countries are not overly concerned with a chnage of leadership as much as they will be if Trevor did resign. There is no sign of a respected successor to him and/or one that can and will alance the country's finance as well as what Trevor has done while under his stuardship.
Mapo Mokoena 9/23/2008 2:51:28 PM
So strange that now we know that the ministers were serving Mr. Mbeki & not the nation. Let them go & give space for people who are ready to serve the nation & not an individual.
Daniel Madumo 9/23/2008 3:00:22 PM
Abahambe shem... no man nor woman is irreplaceable... we will appoint new ministers. this shows they cannot operate without TM. Its a shame to all of them. Did they sworn to serve Mbeki or the country?
Nkosinathi 9/23/2008 3:00:40 PM
I think what Manuel has done only signals solidarity with his former boss. I don't think he is not willing to serve under new leadership-he'll be back when called upon to do so, that's my view!

After been asked to stay on, you indicated that you were staying then resigned BUT willing to serve new president? How confusing Trevor! Insider trading perhaps ? (who else knew you were resigning>o resigning?)
dalton 9/23/2008 3:08:18 PM
those ministres are jokes let them go with their God Mbeki. they were not serving us but they were doing it for Mbeki. cowards
Virggy 9/23/2008 3:09:13 PM
Where is Mr Malema the ANCYL President he said no interviews will be conducted just deployment. Can he please send the list of new deployees!!
Thando 9/23/2008 3:09:47 PM
There goes the "i will serve the republic oath" down the LOO!! next step...(we all know where), we had better start packing!!
Ron 9/23/2008 3:10:56 PM
How on earth does one replace so many ministers, whether good or bad, at the same time with equal, or preferably better people, in such a short time frame? How long had this been planned for by the ANC NEC ascendants to the thrones? One heck-of-a 'benevolent', till now, non-violent coup!
mr loverman 9/23/2008 3:13:43 PM
The ANC or CNA should sort out their internal problems before the country is left without a cabinet, what about people on the ground? think about us before you resign, we voted for you to rule the country but not to put your personal interest upfront. The ANC should do the rigth thing by Reinstating the president of the country before is too late.
Rox 9/23/2008 3:15:47 PM
What exactly is he saying here? What all the other ministers said, that they would help in the handover to the new administration? What other way IS possible for him to serve after handing in his resignation? Some clarification for your country would be much appreciated, Mr. Manuel.
Mu2 9/23/2008 3:22:03 PM
why are we the people of SA held for ransom for their whim and fancies. I guess with all the events unfolding in the last few days we Southafricans must get a wake up call..... Its not about colour anymore;all this will affect our day to day life..... wake up guys
Vernie 9/23/2008 3:24:34 PM
If they want to resign, then let them resign, they are all fatcats anyway. They don't give a damn about the rest of us South Africans, they only look after themselves.
Adrian Stevens 9/23/2008 3:30:17 PM
It appears Tony Yenegni's out just in time...no doubt he's been earmarked for Minister of Finance by our new bunch of "honourable and incorruptible" leaders!
Docter 9/23/2008 3:34:35 PM
Why the hel doesn't the incompotent alcoholic minister of health leave?
Asa 9/23/2008 3:42:58 PM
I had hoped Trevor wouldn't resign for the sake of our country. On the other hand I'd love to see how our hooligans kill this one with their Mshini.
Duncan 9/23/2008 6:42:55 PM
Personally,I think Trevor Manual was right to offer his resignation as he was appointed by the president and if a new president comes into office, ALL the ministers should tender thier resignations -the president is free to "re-appoint" them to serve in his new govt. I think the mistake was made by the presidents office in releasing the statement. They should have waited until the new president was sworn in before making statements.
