Tensions rise at crisis centre
26/05/2008 14:12 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Tensions between displaced Malawian and Somalian foreign nationals have broken out at the Soetwater Disaster Management Centre, due to the lack of space, the City of Cape Town said on Monday.
"The situation was tense since yesterday (Sunday), when about 60 displaced Malawian and Somalian foreign nationals waited outside the Centre, in the hope of getting a place to stay," said spokesperson Robert McDonald.
Xenophobic attacks in Cape Town broke last week, leaving between 10 000 to 18 000 foreigners displaced.
"We are going to have to divert a number of people to other centres before the situation gets worse ... the centre is currently filled to capacity."
He said that no violent incidents had taken place thus far.
