Two months for reintegration
05/06/2008 20:19 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Displaced foreigners will have up to two months' accommodation at temporary shelters before they have to be reintegrated with the communities they came from, the Gauteng provincial government said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Thabo Masebe said foreigners were told from the beginning that their shelters would be temporary.
"In attending to the urgent humanitarian need, part of what was required was to find temporary shelters for the foreigners affected by xenophobic violence as police stations and community centres were not suitable.
"During the two months we are hoping to see a further re-integration of these foreigners back into the communities they came from as in the case in Diepsloot," Masebe said.
The Gauteng government has held talks with communities on allowing a peaceful reintegration.
"The situation is looking positive and we hope reintegration will be achieved," he said.
Displaced foreigners currently dwelling at the Jeppe and Cleveland police station would be moved to their temporary shelters in Rosettenville on Friday.
Once the two months were over these temporary shelters would be dismantled, Masebe said.
