Johannesburg - About 200 people have gathered so far for the march against xenophobia in Newtown, Johannesburg on Saturday, the International Community Unifier (ICU) said.
Spokesperson Mduduzi Dlamini said people have been gathering at the Mary Fitzgerald Square and bus loads of protesters were expected.
"About 600 people including foreign nationals and South African citizens are expected."
"We will be handing over the anti xenophobia memorandum to the Premier's Office by 12.30," he said.
According to the non governmental organisation, ICU Gauteng Premier Mbhazima Shilowa will not be there to accept the memorandum but his spokesperson Simon Zwane will accept it on the premier's behalf.
Protesters held placards and sang songs of peace.
One placard read, "Xenophobia targets black foreigners" only and another read, "Voetsak Xenophobia".
The march is supported by several unions including the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM), African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Football Players Union (SAFPU).
"We are expecting a non-violent protest," said Dlamini.
