Zuma probe extended to UK
30/03/2007 07:54 - (SA)
Johannesburg - African National Congress deputy president Jacob Zuma's chances of being charged with corruption increased on Thursday, The Star newspaper reported.
This followed the granting of a court order allowing the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) to extend its inquiries to British banks and lawyers in its investigation against Zuma and the French arms company Thint.
The NDPP had applied for the order.
The court order stated: "There are reasonable grounds for believing that offences have been committed in the Republic of South Africa or that it is necessary to determine whether offences have been committed, and that an investigation in respect thereof is being conducted."
The Star reported that in order to build up a watertight case against Zuma and Thint the NDPP needed the assistance of the manager of Barclays Bank in London.
Zuma was indicted on charges of corruption following the trial of his financial adviser, businessman Schabir Shaik.
That case was struck off the roll in September last year when the State was not ready to proceed, but the charges can be re-instated.
