ICC looks to improve umpiring
16/02/2004 22:09 - (SA)
Dhaka - The International Cricket Council (ICC) will work with its umpires over the next 12 months to improve consistency and accuracy, its chief executive has said.
"I believe the role of a cricket umpire is the hardest officiating task in international sport," said ICC Chief Executive Malcom Speed after a meeting in Dhaka on Sunday.
He said the ICC and umpires "are committed to working together to increase consistency and accuracy of decision-making in international cricket."
Umpire performance was discussed at the meeting of the ICC's Cricket Committee-Management that coincided with the opening of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Bangladesh, according to a ICC press release.
It reviewed the latest developments in the ICC's performance analysis of umpires.
The committee is one of the key forums within the ICC and has the authority to make decisions on cricket-related matters. Broader policy making issues that come before it are referred to the ICC's Executive Board.
The press release said the ICC has developed an effective system of assessing all decisions made by umpires in Test and one-day versions of the game.
Decisions from all matches are logged and reviewed and comprehensive records are maintained that allow for performance feedback and peer analysis.
