Tsunami benefit match cancelled
27/02/2005 19:54 - (SA)
New Delhi - The Asian Cricket Council has called off the tsunami benefit match between a World XI team and an Asian squad that was to be played in the eastern metropolis of Calcutta in April.
Jagmohan Dalmiya, president of the Asian Cricket Council, said Sunday the match was scrapped because April is not a good time for a cricket game in Calcutta.
"Due to the heat in second half of April, the tsunami match cannot be held in April," Dalmiya was quoted as saying by Press Trust of India.
The Asian body was to organize the match in association with the International Cricket Council to raise funds for victims of the Dec. 26 Asian tsunami.
The first match between the World XI and Asian XI teams was played on 10 January in Melbourne, Australia, raising US$11.4m for tsunami relief operations.
The Calcutta match was originally planned for 13 February, but was postponed because several top players were not available due to national team commitments.
