Johannesburg - A series win should not be used as a yardstick to determine whether Ray Jennings should be appointed South Africa's fulltime coach, says former convener of selectors Omar Henry,.
"It is not really a big feat to beat the Windies, even on their home grounds," Henry said. "I could select a team of cricketers who are in South Africa at present who would beat the Windies without any problems," he added.
"Let us put it this way: If you can't beat the Windies, then you really have problems."
Henry is still one of the national selectors, but his contract expires at the end of the month.
The bad relations, between Henry and Jennings, which have developed over time, got a further injection of venom when Henry asked: "What has Jennings really achieved since becoming the national coach?
"He could not beat India at home and he lost against England on our own pitches."
He also said the players who performed were those who always had performed. "A good coach surely will ensure other stars also start shining."
Henry says a real test for a coach is a Test series against Australia. The last South African coach to be in charge in a series against the Aussies, was Graham Ford.
The new coach to be appointed will have very little time to prepare before heading off Down Under.
There will only be a home series against New Zealand to prepare for the Aussies.
Jennings and Henry have not seen eye to eye for a long time and when the team returned from India Henry was posted as convener, although he still is a selector.
He was replaced by Haroon Lorgat, who is first in line for the permanent appointment as convener.
