Port Elizabeth - The South African cricket selectors will discuss Dale Steyn's position at length before they finalise their team to play New Zealand in the second one-day international here on Friday.
The fiery fast bowler was included in the ODI squad after demolishing the Kiwis in the two Test matches but did not play in the first limited-overs match in Durban last weekend.
Less than 48 hours before the ODI at Kingsmead, Steyn took 1-17 in his four overs in the Twenty20 match at the Wanderers
However, the selectors retained the team that had won the last ODI in Pakistan to clinch that series.
With Graeme Smith's team 1-0 up after the first of three ODIs against New Zealand, the selectors must decide whether Steyn should play at St George's Park and at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday.
"The guys who are in the team at the moment deserve their places," Smith said on Tuesday.
"In Durban, there were times when Dale could have made a contribution but we will have to look at his possible inclusion again in Port Elizabeth and Cape Town."
The Proteas captain said his team's narrow two-wicket, last-ball victory in Durban had been a wake-up call after the comfortable 2-0 Test series win.
Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis are expected to be fully fit again this week after suffering injuries in the second Test in Centurion.
Gibbs hurt his knee and missed the Twenty20 match and the first ODI. Kallis has a rib injury that prevented him from bowling in those matches.
