Challenging chase for SA
02/12/2007 14:23 - (SA)
Cape Town - New Zealand returned to earth on Sunday after their total dominance of South Africa at St George's Park on Friday.
However, the Black Caps still managed a challenging total of 238 for eight in their 50 overs in the third and deciding MTN one-day international at Newlands on Sunday.
Daniel Vettori won the toss for the first time in the series and chose to bat.
Dale Steyn continued his dominance over the visitors when he grabbed Brendon McCullum's wicket with his fifth delivery in his first ODI appearance on home soil.
Herschelle Gibbs took the catch at extra cover, and McCullum, who made 81 on Friday, was out for a duck.
Steyn struck again in the eighth over, when he bowled Lou Vincent for 18.
Jamie How and Scott Styris shared a third wicket stand of 41 before How was trapped leg before wicket by Charl Langeveldt for 15.
Ross Taylor, who has had a disappointing tour, made just three runs before playing on to a delivery from Andre Nel.
Scott Styris reached his 20th ODI 50 off 82 balls, including five boundaries, but he fell to spinner Johan Botha, when Andre Nel took a very good catch on the boundary to dismiss Styris for 60.
Mathew Sinclair was dropped on 25, when Mark Boucher made a rare error, the ball popping out of his glove and going past Graeme Smith, who was backing up, but Sinclair went on to register his eighth ODI half century.
It came up off 68 balls and included two fours. Sinclair and Jacob Oram put on 56 for the sixth wicket before Oram was caught at midwicket by Smith off Langeveldt for 34 at just about a run a ball.
Kyle Mills made 11 before being run out by Langeveldt. Mills started for a run, was sent back by Sinclair, and fell over as he tried to make his crease. Langeveldt had plenty of time to pick up the ball and aim at the stumps.
Steyn ran Sinclair out for 73 off the penultimate ball of the innings, and Daniel Vettori finished not out on nine.
Steyn and Langeveldt picked up two wickets each, and also achieved a run out each. Shaun Pollock was his miserly self, conceding just 26 runs off his 10 overs, and Andre Nel was the most expensive, going for 17 runs off his last over for final figures of one for 52.
