Majola: Arthur remains selector
10/02/2008 12:01 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Cricket South Africa (CSA) chief executive Gerald Majola confirmed on Sunday that Proteas coach Mickey Arthur remained a member of the national selection panel.
"The resolution taken by CSA's General Council on Saturday to remove national coach Mickey Arthur as a national selector was unconstitutional," Majola said on Sunday.
"Mickey Arthur is contracted by Cricket South Africa (Pty) Ltd, and his contracted duties include being a national selector.
"Only the board of directors of CSA (Pty) Ltd can change this, and therefore the resolution taken at General Council's teleconference on Saturday to remove Mr Arthur from the selection process is unconstitutional.
"The teleconference, which I did not participate in, was called by CSA's President, Mr Norman Arendse, to discuss selection and transformation policies."
Majola said he had been in contact with the convenor of selectors, Joubert Strydom, to inform him that the same selection panel would finalise the team to tour Bangladesh.
"The panel comprises Joubert Strydom (convener), Mickey Arthur (national coach), Vincent Barnes (assistant national coach), Graeme Smith (captain), Mustapha Khan (selector) and Shafiek Abrahams (selector)," said Majola.
"The team will be announced tomorrow (Monday) after three players - namely Hashim Amla, Andre Nel, and Neil McKenzie - have undergone fitness tests,
"My office has also received complaints by Mr Arendse against statements allegedly made by Mr Arthur, as well as a similar complaint by Mr Arthur against Mr Arendse.
"Both complaints arise out of a dispute between them regarding selection and transformation issues. Both complaints will be dealt with by CSA's human resources process, and a statement will be issued at an appropriate time."
The General Council held held a meeting via a conference call on Saturday to discuss the crisis in cricket, and instructed Majola to process Arendse's complaint against Arthur as an urgent disciplinary matter before the team's departure for Bangladesh on Wednesday.
