Dubai - The International Cricket Council will have to find another candidate to replace Malcolm Speed as chief executive after Imtiaz Patel turned them down.
According to the Telegraph, the news is another embarrassment for an organisation which, only a year ago, failed to come to a clear decision on its presidency and ended up arranging a compromise deal between England's David Morgan and India's Sharad Pawar.
Speed is stepping down in June or July after seven years as chief executive. Patel was viewed as a compromise candidate who would be acceptable to most of the political factions within the ICC. A fortnight ago, he was happy for his name to be released to the media, but on Sunday he contacted Morgan to turn down the offer.
Now the ICC have the awkward task of asking one of the unsuccessful candidates if he wants the job after all. Their second choice is believed to be another South African of Asian extraction, Haroon Lorgat, an accountant who served as South Africa's convenor of selectors for three years.
There is also a possibility that a third South African, Dave Richardson, could come into play. Richardson, a former Proteas wicketkeeper, runs the cricket side of the ICC's operation under his title of general manager.
