Kanpur, India - Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman put on a half-century stand for the third wicket on Saturday as India recovered from early setbacks to reach 88-2 in its first innings of the third and final Test against South Africa.
Responding to South Africa's first innings total of 265 on a track of uneven bounce, India lost openers Virender Sehwag (8) and Wasim Jaffer (15) cheaply before Dravid (20) and Laxman (33) revived the hosts with an unbroken 53-run partnership up to lunch on day two.
Sehwag hit two boundaries before being trapped lbw by Dale Steyn in the day's fifth over, beaten by an incutter that left him stranded in front of the stumps.
Jaffer was also out lbw, beaten in Morne Morkel's first over by a delivery that kept low.
Leading 1-0 after hammering India by an innings and 90 runs in the second test, South Africa is seeking to clinch the series and displace India from the No. 2 spot in the International Cricket Council's test rankings.
