Steyn sticks with Titans
25/04/2008 11:52 - (SA)
Johannesburg - South Africa's most exciting young bowler Dale Steyn has confirmed that he will continue to play for the Titans when he is not required for national duty.
It was reported after the Proteas return from India Steyn would be moving to Cape Town to join his girlfriend there, and that he would play for the Cape Cobras.
"I think some messages got a bit mixed up," Steyn said on Friday. "I am moving down to Cape Town, which is where my girlfriend lives. I couldn't really do anything while I was in the sub-continent, but when I got back from Bangladesh and India, I was able to sit down with the Titans management, and we agreed that I would continue to play for them.
"It might have been more convenient to play for the Cobras, but it is also easy to get back to Pretoria to join the rest of the team."
Steyn said he had not yet bought a house in Cape Town, but was looking at the Tokai area.
"It's close to Constantia and close to the beaches, and I think it will suit us," he said.
Delighted
Steyn, who has been banned from skateboarding for fear of injury, said he would be doing some surfing. "I guess I'll follow in Jonty (Rhodes) footsteps," he laughed.
Titans chief executive Elise Lombard said she was delighted they had persuaded Steyn to stay with the franchise.
"I think he didn't want to swop the light blue for the dark blue," she joked. "But we are very happy our boy from Phalaborwa is going to continue to play for us. He came through the system, and we don't like to bring the players through only to lose them to another franchise. We don't mind where Dale lives, as long as he plays for the Titans when he is available."
Lombard said the Titans squad for the 2008/2009 would probably be announced next week.
"We've just got a few odds and ends to tie up, and then we can release the names of the squad," she said.
The Titans, who won the MTN domestic championship earlier this year, will play the Dolphins at Kingsmead in Durban in the final of the Standard Bank Pro20 competition on Friday night, with Steyn expected to play an important role.
