Improbable win for Super Kings
08/05/2008 16:25  - (SA)

  • Smith walks and is stumped!
  • 8 barred from playing in SA
  • Gilchrist leads from the front
  • Delhi - The Chennai Super Kings scored an incredible fifteen runs in the final over of their IPL match to achieve an improbable win by four wickets against the Delhi Daredevils on Thursday.

Subramaniam Badrinath (8*) and Manpreet Gony (13*, 5 balls, 1x6, 1x4) were the unlikely batting heroes for the Kings. With fifteen runs needed off the last over, bowled by the spinner Shoaib Malik, Gony smashed a six and a four off the first three deliveries.

Badrinath hit it to deep mid wicket for the winning run off the last legitimate delivery of the match.

The Daredevils scored 187/5 in their 20 overs. The Kings managed 188/6 in their reply.

It looked as if Glenn McGrath, Moammad Asif and Yo Mahesh had all but sealed victory for the Daredevils towards the business end of the match.

McGrath and Asif frustrated MS Dhoni and his batting colleagues, as they could not score a boundary for 25 consecutive deliveries, and the Kings needed 22 runs for victory off the last two overs.

McGrath conceded 23 runs off his four disciplined overs.

Mahesh got rid of Dhoni (33, 33 balls, 3x4) and Chamara Kapugedera (8) with the first two deliveries of the nineteenth over and forced the Kings to chase fifteen runs for victory off the last over.

    Century-partnership off 67 balls

But Malik imploded under pressure and also bowled a wide to alleviate the pressure.

Earlier, a spectacular half-century by Gautam Gambhir and a 121-run partnership with Shikhar Dhawan powered the Delhi Daredevils to 187/5. Gambhir scored 80 off 49 balls, with eleven fours and a six.

Dhawan added 59 off 46 deliveries, with six fours and two sixes. Their century-partnership came off 67 balls.

The Chennai Super Kings started off in spectacular fashion. Stephen Fleming and Swaramakrishnan Vidyat smashed 62 runs during the power plays.

Vidyat (40, 23 balls, 6x4,1x6) perished in his quest for more boundaries as the Kings slumped to 62/1 in 6.1 overs, but Fleming continue to prosper with fluent cuts and back foot drives square of the wicket.

Fleming was superbly caught by AB de Villiers in the covers off Mohammad Asif for 44. It came off 28 balls, with seven fours.

Albie Morkel (30, 15 balls, 2x4, 3x6) gave the innings much needed inspiration and momentum with some big hitting as he reduced Dhoni to the role of admiring spectator at the other end.

Morkel and Dhoni added 40 runs in four overs before Morkel was run out with the score on 138/4 in the fifteenth over.

    Teams:

Delhi Daredevils: Virender Sehwag (captain), Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan, AB de Villiers, Shoaib Malik, Dinesh Karthik, Manoj Tiwary, Rajat Bhatia, Yo Mahesh, Mohammad Asif, Glenn Mgrath.

Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni (captain), Stephen Fleming, Parthiv Patel, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan, Suresh Raina, Albie Morkel, S Badrinath, Joginder Sharma, Manpreet Gony, Makhaya Ntini, Muttiah Muralitharan.
