Barcelona- Spain's two-time world champion Fernando Alonso of Renault recorded the best time during the third day of practice on Wednesday at the Montmelo circuit which will host the fourth Grand Prix of the season on April 27.
Alonso, who used the new slick tyres authorised for 2009, timed one minute 18.483 seconds, ahead of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher of Ferrari who clocked in with a best time of one minute 19.323 seconds.
After a disappointing start to the season, Renault has been experimenting with changes to its R28 vehicle aimed at improving its aerodynamic set-up.
"We're improving, that is certain," Alonso told reporters on Tuesday after his first day of testing at the circuit.
Alonso, who won back-to-back world championships with Renault in 2005 and 2006 and came close last year with McLaren, has hinted at leaving the French side if it does not perform well this season.
