Augusta - Early morning mist delayed the start of the 72nd Masters here on Thursday after golfing legend Arnold Palmer had slapped the opening ceremonial drive down the first fairway.
The 78-year-old four-time Green Jacket winner, who played in 50 Masters, was back for a second straight year as honorary starter, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1963.
Palmer promptly stood aside after his effort to allow the first trio of players in the elite 94-strong field to tackle the daunting Augusta National layout, but the poor visibility prevented any immediate play.
Former British Open Champion Ben Curtis and former USPGA champion Shaun Micheel were first up, followed by Fuzzy Zoeller, Brett Wetterich and Heath Slocum.
Tiger Woods was to open his quest for an unprecedented Grand Slam of golf at 10:45 (16:45 GMT) playing in the company of US Open champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina and Stuart Appleby of Australia, who led entering the final round last year.
