Melbourne - Australia are the only top 10 country in the men's basketball tournament which has been hit by Canada's decision not to participate in Melbourne on the grounds that their top players were not available.
The Boomers, as the Australians are known, are also missing some key players but they are strong favourites to carry off the gold.
The main threat could come from New Zealand's Tall Blacks who were a surprise semi-finalist at the 2002 world championships.
The home team should also easily win the women's competition spurred on by Lauren Jackson, widely regarded as the best player in the world at present.
South Africa will have a team competing in the men's section.
