Melbourne - Australia are the strongest nation in cycling but they are unlikely to relive the bonanza that they had in Manchester four years ago where they won 10 of the 17 gold medals up for grabs.
This time Britain, New Zealand, Canada and South Africa are all expected to be prominent in the final medal tally while Malaysia may pull off a surprise.
In the women's sprint ranks they can call on world-record holder and Olympic 500m individual time trial champion Anna Meares, and her sister Kerrie, a dual gold medallist in Manchester.
Amongst the men, sprinter Ryan Bayley, a dual Olympic gold medallist in Athens is back, although below his peak after being injured in a crash last year.
The Australians believe the threats in the men's events will come from Scotland in the team sprint, England in the team pursuit and South Africa in the road race.
The experienced Robbie Hunter will lead the SA team's charge.
